Our Story
Kura Waka carries a story of transformation.
What once was an empty and desolate school building from 1887 slowly became a vibrant and soulful place for connection, consciousness and inspiration.
In 1997, Michaela bought the old building and began to bring life back into its walls. Not alone, but with the help, hands and hearts of many souls who felt called to contribute.
Over the years, people from different paths, cultures and corners of the world have walked through these doors. Teachers, healers, musicians, artists, builders, travellers, seekers, friends and strangers — each leaving something behind, each adding a small stone to the spirit of the place.
Kura Waka became more than a retreat centre.
It became a living house.
A place where people gather around the fire, share stories, heal, come together in ceremony, create, and connect through art, silence, movement and shared human experience.
Here, Michaela and others will share stories from the past, memories of the house, the people who helped shape it, and the moments that made Kura Waka what it is today.
