Deeper into Maori Healing

Romiromi — Deep Tissue Māori Bodywork

Romiromi is a powerful form of Māori healing bodywork that works deeply through muscles, tissue, organs and energetic blockages.

It is often used when deeper physical and emotional release is needed. Through pressure, rhythm, breath and presence, Romiromi supports the body in releasing stagnation and restoring flow.

Mirimiri is a more intuitive and subtle healing practice. It may involve touch, but it can also work through energy, vibration, prayer, intention and spiritual awareness.

Mirimiri listens to what is hidden beneath the surface — supporting emotional release, energetic balance and reconnection with the self.

Breath is an essential part of Māori healing. Te Hā, the breath of life, helps to move energy, soften resistance and bring awareness back into the body.

Through breath, the body can begin to open, release and remember its natural rhythm.

Wairua refers to the spiritual essence or unseen life force within us.

In Māori healing, the body is not treated as separate from spirit. Healing often moves through both the visible and invisible layers — the physical body, emotions, energy, ancestors and spiritual connection.

Whenua means land, but also placenta — reminding us of the deep relationship between body, ancestry and Earth.

Māori healing is connected to the natural world: the land, sea, forests, mountains, elements and cycles of life. Healing is not forced, but guided by listening to these natural rhythms.

Tūpuna are the ancestors.

Within Traditional Māori Healing, ancestral knowledge is not something from the past only. It is living wisdom — carried through generations, families, teachings, stories, bodies and spirit.

Learning from Indigenous healers offers a rare opportunity to receive from this living lineage with respect and humility.

remember its natural rhythm.

A Wānanga is more than a training. It is a space of learning, sharing, remembering and transformation.

During this Māori Healing Training, you are invited not only to learn techniques, but to enter a deeper relationship with presence, intuition, bodywork, energy and wairua.

Do I Need Experience to Join?

No previous experience is needed to join level 1

You only need openness, respect for the tradition and willingness to learn through the body, through practice and through direct experience.

Yes, the levels can be booked separately.

Level 1, 2 and 3 together form the foundation of the training. Each level builds naturally upon the previous one, so we advise joining the full Level 1, 2 & 3 immersion if you are new to this work.

It is also possible to enter at Level 2, 3, 4 or 5 based on your experience with Māori healing and in consultation with us.

Yes, this is a certified Traditional Māori Healing Training.

You will receive certification for the level or levels you complete.

The training includes teachings, bodywork practice, shared learning, accommodation at Kura Waka, organic meals, use of the retreat spaces including sauna, pool, ceremony room and space for relaxing and integration.

Participants will also receive a gift after completing the full course.

The training takes place at Kura Waka, a retreat house in the north of the Netherlands.

Kura Waka offers warm practice spaces, shared accommodation, organic meals, a garden, fire, silence and enough space to rest between sessions.

It is both.

You come to learn and practice, but you also live in the rhythm of the retreat house. It feels like a holiday where you enrich your knowledge at the same time, with space for teaching, bodywork, sharing, food, rest, community and integration.

Yes, this work can be deeply supportive for people who are carrying physical, emotional, mental or spiritual tension.

Many people come to Traditional Māori Healing when they feel that something deeper is asking to be seen, felt or released — sometimes also when regular approaches have not reached the whole of what they are experiencing.

Romiromi, Mirimiri and Rongoā Māori offer another way of listening to the body, the heart, wairua and the deeper layers of life.

At the same time, this is a training and healing path, not an emergency service. If you are in immediate crisis or feel unsafe, we advise seeking support close to you first.

If you are unsure whether the training or an individual healing session is the right place to begin, feel welcome to contact us.

So much love, again! Thank you Kura Waka! Dancing the 5rhythms, sweating in the sweat lodge, cacao ceremony, sound healing, pool, delicious food. Wow! Super nice for 5 days in the summer after my winter weekend experience in 2024. Are you looking for something or nothing at all? Then look here! I am already looking forward to the Māori wisdom that will be shared again next month in the bodywork trainings 💛💛💛💛💛

I have been coming to kurawaka for a few years now for the Maori healing trainings, given by Ruatea. It has brought me so much beauty. And so much more beauty is yet to come. It felt like coming home immediately when I took the first step into kurawaka. Michaela ensures a warm welcome and receives you with open arms. I highly recommend attending any event at kurawaka.

The Maori training levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 have been incredibly valuable to me and still are. I didn't really come for the bodywork, but for self-healing, insight, and I was also simply searching. It was a rollercoaster for me, but a very good one. I am still grateful that these ancient wisdoms and knowledge are shared in the training. Finally, I gained a sense of foundation within myself that I can continue to build upon, regained the feeling of "being human," and a connection with ancestors—a whole that I couldn't even imagine before the training. In fact, I can't even put into words what it has done and how it has touched me; you simply have to experience it. For me, it is a path I will continue to walk. While I initially came for self-healing, I received much more, and I ended up giving romiromi mirimiri myself. Besides the special training, you also arrive at a magical place in Kura Waka, where a special atmosphere hangs. It is clear that this was set up with a lot of love, and by the way, you can taste that same love in the delicious food. This training is simply the real deal, and I am already looking forward to participating in the next training... on to level 5

I participated in the Māori Bodywork Training, and it touched me deeply on so many levels. The experience has profoundly enriched both my life and my sense of being. During the training, our group stayed at beautiful Kura Waka, a spirited center that offers not only a safe and nurturing environment, but also honors authenticity by inviting indigenous Māori teachers to share these ancient traditions with great respect and integrity. It was an experience far beyond anything I could have imagined beforehand — truly unforgettable and deeply meaningful.

The Maori teachings are very valuable to me. It changed my body, my perception and my relationship with life and god itself. Eventhough not clear at first, my nervous system was responding totale different and was much more at ease when i arrived back home. Also the Kura-Waka school had it’s own magic, the place and food have a lot of love and care in it, so it serves the purpose perfectly. For everyone who’s ready to go deep, i can recommend.

Wow, what a way to wake up! This morning, after yesterday's third Maori session, I feel extremely blessed. I am very curious to see how this crystallizes further. But for now, I feel 'shaken, stirred, and wobbled' and absolutely happy. Dear Michael, a huge thank you for everything, and know that what you do is miraculous!!

What a fantastic place at the tip of the province of Groningen, where Maori Elder Te Kaha shared his wisdom on the role of men during pregnancy and childbirth, and massage techniques for the pregnant woman. Hostess Michaela is a multi-talent and created a safe space for a lovely group. Highly recommended! Love, Jessica

Wow wow, Kura Waka under the inspiring guidance of Michaela is warm and relaxed, making you feel right at home. I came for the Haputanga, The Maori Way of Birthing, with Te Kaha from New Zealand. It is very special that this was possible in these times. A huge thank you, Michaela, for allowing my three children to come along; they had a wonderful time (they wanted to stay even longer ;-)). It is incredibly beautiful how you bring, facilitate, and live the atmosphere, details, care, and nourishment (physical and spiritual) through Kura Waka! Thank you 💖 Warm regards, Karina

Just attended an inspiring Haputanga workshop by Te Kaha, who shared ancient wisdom regarding the birth process, in which, according to Maori tradition, the man played an important role. Something that still requires plenty of progress in today's world. The welcome was warm and loving, the food delicious, and the workshop is full of new, broadening insights that can also be applied to life after the birth process. Highly recommended.

Today we were invited to experience deep Mäori healing. The three of us were warmly welcomed to a very special place where I felt love and safety. I surrendered to a Mäori healing session where I was able to feel at very deep levels. I am deeply impressed by this special Mäori session! My daughter also chose a healing with Yolanda! Wow, what a rewarding afternoon we had!

The Maori healing session/deep tissue treatment with Michaela was profound and powerful. From the very beginning, I felt a clear, safe field where I could fully immerse myself in my body and the process. During the session, much was released; tension was released, and noticeably more space was created. What makes this treatment distinctive for me is the combination of firmness, presence, and pure attunement. Michaela senses exactly where she is needed and remains respectful and clear. A powerful experience for those who are willing to truly connect with their body and allow old layers to move. Ah 🌹🫶

I was here two weeks ago for a Maori healing session. A massage I'll never forget. I did this because I've been in pain from excessive tension for months. Nothing seems to help. But this! I was free of all my pain. I never expected that. It's not a gentle session, but so wonderful. And the people are so kind. You can be completely yourself here, in this beautiful place. You don't need anything more. Thank you so much, my dears!
